The Service Industry

Writing songs for any sort of theatrical project is an act of service.

Service towards the story, service towards the character, and service towards the project as a whole.

Beautiful things get cut, that’s just how it is. There’s any number of reasons a song could be cut that has nothing to do with its quality. Characters gain or lose relevance, story arcs change, songs which used to be perfect can end up causing poor pacing because the things that surround them had to be changed, etc.

It’s always unfortunate when it happens, but you have to let them die. If you want to keep songs based on their quality in isolation, write a personal album.

This is the service industry.
